Description
mail from amanda @ document cloud; need to check if the current geocoding / address extraction code handles this well currently:
Nick,
I'm dialing back through some to-do lists and I have this note that clearly states that I'm to tell you what all is wrong with EveryBlock?, at least from my experience.
At Gotham Gazette, we never tried to run EveryBlock? ourselves -- I was more consistently frustrated by trying to get our reporting mapped.
Here's a classic example of a story that contains information that could and should have been mapped:

2004 Fulton Street is a real address, but West Side Campaign Against Hunger, GRACE Church, Reaching Out Community Services in South Brookly and Bed Stuy Campaign Against Hunger all have physical locations. There are plenty of mentions of known Brooklyn neighborhoods
in there, too: Browsnville, Bed Stuy.
That story never showed up on EveryBlock?. Very, very few of our stories ever did. I wanted some data about how to help them appear. We would gladly have added the exact addresses of each food pantry if that meant the story would be mapped.
It looks like a lot more is getting mapped:

I'm not sure if those are new improvements or not. Either way, we would have loved some way to indicate or flag an address in stories that weren't getting mapped.
That's what I know.

Basically all such questions are going to come down to: is the relevant street (eg. 2004 Fulton St) in the database? Is it ambiguous (i.e. there's one in multiple boroughs), and if so is there some disambiguator like the borough name right next to the address? If it's a place name, is it in the Places table? Those are the things that have to be done; nothing has changed or is going to change in this regard anytime soon.
